Sudan wants no part of UN

The government of Sudan continues to paint itself into a dark corner with recent attempts to prevent Jan Egeland, UN under-secretary for humanitarian affairs, from visiting a Sudanese refugee camp in Chad. Currently the hell that is Darfur is patrolled by the ill-equipped, ill-trained and overwhelmed African Union forces. They are supposed to be there to quell the Khartoum sponsored militias that are raping and killing what is left of the Darfur population. The AU troops have been anything but successful, and the UN has been pushing for Sudan to allow a UN peace keeping force into Darfur.

This latest episode just reinforces an already well understood situation. In its slow killing off of blacks in Sudan's Darfur region, the Khartoum Arab dominated government wants no foreign witnesses -- and definitely no intervention.

    Personally, I think all aid should be cut off to Sudan. They should be completely isolated from the International community and all the countries in the Arab league should be forced to comply or threatened with similar treatment. Sudan should also be made aware that regardless of their mineral resources (and they have many), we will ostracize them. I keep waiting for Stephen Harper's government to say something but not yet.

Civil disobedience is called for

In an act of desperation, Tim DeCristopher chose civil disobedience to disrupt the bidding process that saw 149,000 acres of public land leased off to oil companies in Utah. The lease of the land to oil companies, to allow drilling, has been contested by many who wish to preserve the pristine land, located near Arches National Park, the White River, the greater Desolation Canyon region, Labyrinth Canyon, the benches east of Canyonlands National Park, Nine Mile Canyon, the Book Cliffs and the Deep Creek Mountains. It is one of the final sell-off by the dying Bush administration. DeCristopher showed at the auction, registered as a bidder, and started bidding -- and winning -- with no intention of purchasing or paying for the auctions he won. Way to go dude! You're a hero!
