Wired 11.04 I've been buying Wired Magazine now for and find myself reading every issue from front to back, including the some of the ads. This issue celebrates Wired's 10th year as a publication and carries the tagline, "Recession. Iraq. Hard times in Silicon Valley. Hell of a time to be optimistic. Welcome to 1993, the year Wired was born." Nice 10-year history is chronicled, as well as a look ahead to 2013 - what might 10-years from now bring. Read, and stay tuned. Some of the highlights from the magazine:
  • The Bacteria Whisperer: so just how smart are bacteria anyway? Read, you might be surprised. They're talking to each other. More than that actually, they're communicating and deciding when to attack. Scary quote from the article: "we have given a 50-year course in antibiotic resistance to an enemy that reproduces every 20 minutes." It's amazing we're still around.
  • Starlight Express: a quick take on the concept of a space elevator - built of carbon nanotubes. NASA actually thinks this is now viable. I remember a quote from Asimov, which I will paraphase here (recall that he wrote a story way back when that featured a space elevator) - "we will have a space elevator 50-years after everyone has stopped laughing at the idea." NASA is no longer laughing. Read the article.
  • Barry Diller Has No Vision for the Future of the Internet: there is one guy making money from the internet - real money. Read about him and how he's doing - and guess what? He's a traditional, non-nonsense business guy, not one of the wunderkinds that went bust with the boom. My favourite quote from the aricle is from an un-named ex-Universal exec: "premature technology arousal." This one kills me. It very aptly describes what I've seen and heard from my executive types after they've been wow-ed by some PowerPoint slides hyping some save the world technology. It ain't real, until it's real. But then again, like this article serves to highlight, executive types don't always become executive types by having some firm grounding in reality. This is a great article, enjoy it!
