RSS

BusinessWeek has a nice introduction to RSS (Really Simple Syndication). RSS is similar to push technology like Pointcast, from the 1990s -- with a very important difference -- previous push technology didn't give end consumers much choice over what they got. They subscribed, and received what was pushed to them. RSS gives control however. Using an RSS newsreader or an RSS service, users decide what news, blogs or content they wish to receive. RSS allows the user selection to be aggregated and downloaded to a centralized application or service. The potential for RSS is great. Businesses could use it to deliver content on their intranets; or to deliver subscribed content to their customers.
