DARPA Grand Challenge

And we have a winner! DARPA's grand challenge ended without a complete disaster this year, with vehicles actually finishing for once. Five of them actually. The winning team, taking home $2 million cash, was for Stanford's "Stanley." Finishing in just under 7 hours and averaging 19 mph, Stanley was hailed as a great leap forward for autonomous, robotic vehicles. While the accomplishment was a great one, it somehow doesn't quite conjure up the image of deadly robotic vehicles scouring a battlefield and picking off humans as they cower in fear. That of course if the reason for DARPA's grand challenge. But I suppose the beginning of the end of the human race would have to have a modest beginning.
